Opossum in the chicken coop. august 8, 2013 january 11, 2018. caution: this is an update to this post added on january 11, 2017. after writing this opossum-friendly post, i have heard from several chicken keepers who have in fact had chickens killed by opossums (you can find their stories in the comments below).. My son had the flashlight, and within seconds i heard him yell “oh my gosh! there’s an opossum in the chicken coop!” i saw a small opossum curled up behind the five-gallon chicken waterer as i peeked into the coop. johnny had the young opossum cornered in the coop, and he or she looked terrified.. I grew up in dilworth mn, what do you expect? lol.
Possums drool or play dead if they get scared. hence, where the saying, "playing possum" originated from. males are more aggressive than the females but females are great hunters and will kill chickens to feed their young. "possums chewed a hole under my hen house and had babies. they were so cute.. Opossums are often blamed for killing chickens or digging in the garbage bins, but it happens very rarely or easily preventable. they are certainly opportunists, and gladly clean up the mess left by humans or other creatures, but nature is pragmatic: chicken is too much effort.. Last night, i found 2 of my banty chickens wadering in the icy driveway while the rest were roosted in the tree. i took them both to the coop, closed the door and went to bed. this morning, i went to let them out, and found one dead rooster, one very nervous hen, and a possum sound asleep in the corner. we tried waking him up, but he just showed us teeth and went back to sleep..
